Add the self-raising flour, the sugar, and the cocoa powder to the bowl. Rinse and dry the tablespoon measure between adding each ingredient. Mix together thoroughly.
Now add the egg, the milk, the vegetable oil, and optionally the vanilla. Mix together again until all clumps of dry ingredients are gone. Stir in chocolate chips if desired.
Heat uncovered in the microwave. For a 900W microwave heat for 3 minutes. For a 1150W microwave heat for 2 minutes 20 seconds.
Be careful when taking out of the microwave - the bowl will be very hot.
I always put a couple of scoops of ice cream on top. I find the cake is a bit dry otherwise.
